Pregnancy & motherhood can often be a very emotional time for women and thankfully, for most, it is a wonderful journey. However, for some women this can unfortunately be a time of significant distress. Unexpected pregnancy, complicated life circumstances, attachment issues, health problems or a perinatal loss can trigger a decrease in mental health status or exacerbate existing conditions. Most families go through a period of adjustment post birth, and whilst it is common for women to experience "baby blues", it is estimated that 1 in 7 women in Australia will experience symptoms of post natal depression and anxiety following the birth of their child. This clinic uses a variety of evidence based therapies to assist women and their partners with a range of difficulties throughout the perinatal period.

Using an empathic, respectful and person centered approach, therapeutic intervention at Petals Perinatal Psychology incorporates several evidence based therapies to assist in reducing distress and addressing difficulties throughout the perinatal period such as:

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

Dialectic Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

Solution Focused Therapy (SFT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Mindfulness & Relaxation Techniques (MRT)

Psychological Intervention is provided for issues, which are often triggered or commonly co-occurring during pregnancy. Such difficulties may include, but certainly not limited to:

  • PERINATAL STRESS / ANXIETY / DEPRESSION

  • COPING WITH UNPLANNED PREGNANCY

  • TERMINATION / ADOPTION DECISIONS

  • PROBLEMATIC PARENT & INFANT ATTACHMENT

  • RELATIONSHIP OR FAMILY DISTRESS

  • SEPARATION / ABANDONMENT

  • PRIOR DIAGNOSED MENTAL HEALTH

  • EMOTIONAL AND / OR LIFE ADJUSTMENT

  • IVF OR UNPLANNED MULTIPLE BIRTHS

  • GRIEF AND LOSS / PERINATAL LOSS TRAUMA
